Getting some slope time in Whistler Blackcomb

Hi and welcome to hambajalan, our travel blog! We are Duncan and Tiara. We live and work in London and love exploring this fantastic city. But mainly we use it as a base to explore the world as much as our leave and budget allow.

“Even though I’ve lived abroad as long as I’ve lived in Indonesia, I am a proud Indonesian and I revel in the ‘excitement’ that comes with traveling with an Indonesian passport. I hope this blog can be a vehicle to share stories, experiences, tips and tricks relating to travel and visas which would be of use to those of you who are not European / American!”

Tiara

“I’m South African born and bred, but with Scottish ancestry which has also allowed me to live and work in the UK. I love combining travel with activities, such as running a big city marathon, climbing an active volcano or watching my favourite sports teams battle it out. I also love researching upcoming trips, and would love to share tips and tricks with others out there.”

So why hambajalan?

hambajalan means “to go the road” and is a combination of both South African Zulu and Bahasa Indonesian. hamba is a Zulu word meaning to go, whilst jalan is an Indonesian word meaning street or road.

There are many fantastic travel blogs out there are written from the point of view of the nomad traveller who has given up on the rat race to follow their wanderlust. Whilst we applaud their passion, not all of us want give it all up to travel the world (as awesome as that always sounds). We have jobs, families, homes that we want to be around. This blog is for people like us, sharing our lessons and insights from the trips we’ve taken, either as paid vacation or weekend trips.
